Full Job Description - Read Carefully


The Technical Developer is responsible for developing products within the respective categories of Perishables, Edible Groceries, and Non-Edible Groceries. This specialised role within the national private label team involves participating in various activities related to the technical specifications and actual production during the product's development phase.

The main objective is to ensure adherence to the brief, cost-effectiveness, high quality, food safety, and the factory's capability to produce the product to the required specification.

Job Objectives

  • Develop products within the designated sub-category, from concept to launch.
  • Collaborate closely with the QA and compliance teams to maintain product quality throughout its life cycle and ensure legal compliance.
  • Work closely with the packaging team to ensure sustainable packaging development, product functionality, and food safety.
  • Manage the development process from inception to launch, including reference sampling purchases, panel tastings, data capture, analysis, and reporting.
  • Source and evaluate raw materials for functionality.
  • Develop product formulations.

  • Determine formulation costs and develop products within specified cost targets set out by the buyer.
  • Conduct factory trials and oversee production. (This will include local travel from time to time)
  • Verify claims and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Present final products to the line manager and the broader team.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, QA, and compliance teams to write product specifications.
  • Assist in the artwork rollout process to ensure labels comply with regulations and product specifications.
  • Attend or assist virtually with first production.
  • Obtain Green Seal sample approval from the Senior Technical Development Officer.
  • Provide ongoing factory support in resolving product-related technical challenges and improving production processes.
  • Engage in value engineering initiatives.

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc in Food Science, BTech in Food Technology, BSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or other relevant Nutritional Sciences, or equivalent

Experience

Essential 

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a similar role involving Food Production and Technical Specification/Development.
  • Experience in Research and Development/New Product Development within a food FMCG manufacturing/production environment, preferably in edible and/or non-edible grocery items and/or frozen and chilled perishable items.
  • 2-3 years of experience in developing food products from inception to the launching stage, improving both new and existing products.
  • 2-3 years of experience working with Quality Management Systems.
