You want to become a security officer in South Africa, but you're not sure what the job entails or what kind of salary you can expect. For those considering careers as security officers in South Africa, the good news is that the industry has never been more lucrative.

The bad news? It’s pretty competitive, so it helps to know exactly what you’re getting into before diving headfirst into the world of on-the-job training and off-duty shift work.

A Day in the Life of a security officer

A security officer is responsible for monitoring an assigned area and ensuring that everything remains secure. Every day, these professionals respond to emergencies and calls for assistance, as well as proactively seek out situations that pose a threat.

The type of business, building or facility they work at will dictate their daily routine, but no matter where they work they can expect to complete certain tasks throughout their shift.

Security officers are trained to follow a protocol designed by law enforcement agencies and should be able to provide first aid when necessary. They also may be required to carry weapons on them while on duty, so it’s important for them to know how to handle firearms safely.

They are also required by law to report any suspicious activity they witness while on duty.

The Security Guard Code of Conduct

In order to protect yourself, your colleagues and your employer, you need to know exactly what is expected of you while on duty. The code of conduct for security guards is not a legally binding document; however, most employers will have an ethical clause written into contracts stating that employees must behave in an honest and fair manner at all times. This extends to work behaviour as well as off-duty conduct.

Security Guard Work Hours

On average, security guards work a 9-to-5 shift. Shifts are usually split into three eight-hour blocks, with two breaks for lunch and one for dinner. If you’re hired as a guard for an evening event or festival, you may be required to work a longer shift.

In that case, make sure your employer provides a place for you to take breaks and eat meals during your shift—and provides transportation home if necessary.

Work Environment and Demands of a Security Guard

Security guards work in a variety of settings, from warehouses and sports arenas to banks and government facilities. A typical shift lasts eight hours, and security officers must be on their feet for much of that time. Security guards are charged with protecting life and property, so they must be physically fit.

They should have good hand-eye coordination and be able to follow detailed instructions carefully. They must know how to operate office equipment like computers, printers and photocopiers if they are employed at an office facility.

How Much Money Can I Make as a Security Guard?

Working as a security guard can be a great first job for someone who is just entering into or returning to civilian life. Many companies hire security guards and pay them on an hourly basis.

The amount of money you can make as a security guard really depends on your level of experience and where you work. The average salary for a security guard is R 5 542 per month in South Africa.

Security Guards - Requirements

To apply for a security guard job, you must be at least 18 years old. In most cases, you will also need to have completed Grade 12 and passed Maths, English and at least one science subject.

To obtain more complex roles, higher education may be required. Most security companies prefer you not to have a criminal record (this applies equally across all industries). During your interview process, your past experience will likely come under scrutiny.
