Do Corrections Officers get any training?

On average, correctional officers receive around 100 hours of formal training before beginning their careers. This training takes place in jails or prisons, either during working hours or at night when they’re on duty. In addition to taking classes about their profession, trainees also learn about jail safety and protocol.

As a result, by the time they graduate from their training program, correctional officers have knowledge that allows them to work safely and effectively with inmates. To learn more about working as a corrections officer, read our job description.

Job Requirements for this career path

In terms of job requirements, there is some variation from position to position. Most positions require a high school diploma or equivalent for entry-level employees. Those who desire to work with juveniles need at least two years of experience working with kids in a classroom setting.

All applicants must be eligible to work in South Africa without restrictions, as they are required to pass a background check as part of their employment process. Applicants should also not have any criminal convictions.

Applicants will then receive training on policies and procedures at the Department of Correctional Services before being assigned to an institution.

Salary Structure

While most careers with a degree or certificate require at least a high school diploma, careers within the Department of Correctional Services frequently require more education. With more advanced degrees, you may qualify for a higher salary with better benefits than someone with only a high school diploma.

Job prospects for individuals with advanced degrees are much better than for those who have only earned their high school diploma.

There are few careers as emotionally charged or potentially physically dangerous as that of a corrections officer. That’s not to say that corrections officers don’t receive many benefits, however. A career in corrections can provide the opportunity for better work-life balance than jobs with more erratic hours, for example.

Sudden personal emergency? Don't worry about taking time off from your job--you won't be penalized! In fact, you'll still get paid! You'll also have access to an excellent health care plan and pension plans.
